October 17 - ANGEL'S SONG

ANGEL'S SONG was first heard, with its key slightly higher, in a commercial for Panasonic D-Snap music players in October 2003.

You can see the rather ridiculous commercial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP2MsObp2IY

The song's video is no less ridiculous; in fact, Ayu seemed rather unhappy with it when interviewed about it later (although, of course, she was polite about the end result being "not what [she] expected"). In it, she saves a bank from being robbed by turning into a werewolf (thanks to a clock that resembles a full moon enough to somehow work) and performing the most ridiculous karate moves any stunt double in a wolf suit has ever performed. After saving the bank from being robbed, she... robs the bank, thanks to a manager who's too terrified of her to give her anything short of a huge bag of cash when she tries to withdraw a few hundred dollars. Rather than count out her $480 and insist that the manager take the rest of the bag back, she blows him a kiss and goes on her way. Nothing about this description is inaccurate or embellished, the video really is that silly.

If that description wasn't enough for you, you can watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nllApWhUkIM

The synth fanfare at the song's intro is a bit of a mess, but in general the song is an adorable, upbeat "thanks for being there" tune that serves as a delightful opener for the Memorial address mini-album.

Lyrics:

"I'm never alone!" I told myself,
taking refuge in the night.
But in the end, that just brought to light
the isolation I experienced every day.

On my way home, tired after a hectic day,
nothing was different from usual but
I thought "Is this same thing always going to repeat?"
and suddenly I was filled with tears.

Being unreliable and pitiable,
I felt so anxious and lonesome.
I wanted the warmth of a voiceless voice...

And sure enough,
you suddenly materialized,
shining a light on my darkness.
Then, you smiled a little,
said "You're OK" with a nod,
and took my hand as you started walking.
And I saw the wings of an angel on your back.

The reason why I wanted to become strong
wasn't because I wanted to dull my pain.

I was rescued and I was supported.
We gave to one another and we forgave one another.
[I wanted to be strong] because on that day, I had something I wanted to protect.

And sometimes, you
come at me with all you have
the the point where you're completely defenseless.
And you become so radiant to me
that I don't dare shut my eyes, even to blink.
You have the wings of an angel on your back.

And sure enough,
you suddenly materialized,
shining a light on my darkness.
Then, you smiled a little,
said "You're OK" with a nod,
and took my hand as you started walking.

And sometimes, you
come at me with all you have
the the point where you're completely defenseless.
And you become so radiant to me
that I don't dare shut my eyes, even to blink.
You have the wings of an angel on your back.

I want you not to become a victim
of the sad times we live in.
I sing again today in the hopes
that this earnest wish reaches you.
